How to use : PineTab Tab Organizer Extension!

Hello everyone ! 👋😁

💁🏻‍♂️ Download link: Install the extension 🧞‍♂️

I'm excited to introduce my first Chrome extension: PineTab 🧞‍♂️. It's a tab organizer designed to help streamline your digital workspace and enhance your browsing experience.

Before I roll out a full-fledged website detailing the extension's features, I wanted to put together a quick manual. So, let's dive right in 🧙🏻‍♀️:

1. The Interface

The main interface of the PineTab extension is divided into three distinct areas: the header, the main body (which itself is divided into window and tab containers) and the tool box.
  1. Header: The header provides quick information about your browsing activity, displaying the number of open tabs, selected tabs and open windows.

  2. Main Body: This area encapsulates the heart of PineTab's functionalities. The upper part displays all your open windows, each showing the number of tabs inside them (except for the first one labeled 'ALL'). Clicking on each window reveals its tabs. The lower section presents a comprehensive list of all open tabs.

  3. Toolbox: Situated on the right of the main interface, the toolbox contains several functional buttons: 'Select All', 'Save and Close', 'Close', 'Change Directory', 'Rename Directory', 'Settings' and 'Help'. I'll delve into each of these buttons later on.

2. Selecting Tabs and Windows

Selecting tabs with PineTab is straightforward and there are several ways to do it based on your preference. You can use a combination of mouse actions and keyboard commands for even more control.

  1. - Mouse Dragging: This is as simple as it sounds. Just click and drag your mouse over the tabs you wish to select.

  1. - Ctrl + Mouse Dragging
: If you want to select tabs in multiple sections, hold down the Ctrl key while you drag the mouse. This way, you can add to your selection without losing previously selected tabs.

  1. - Clicking to Select/Unselect: A single click on a tab will select it if it isn't already, or unselect it if it is.

  2. - Shift + Click: If you want to select a range of tabs at once, click on the first tab, hold down the Shift key, and then click on the last tab. This will select all tabs in between.

  1. - Ctrl + Click: If you want to select multiple tabs without losing your current selection, you can hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on the tabs you want to add or remove from your selection.

  1. - Select All Tabs (Ctrl + A): To select all the tabs in the current window at once, click on the first button in the toolbox or simply tap Ctrl + A. It's a real time-saver when you need to manage a lot of tabs!

This selection mechanism is designed to feel intuitive, much like selecting files and folders on your computer. With these simple steps, you'll have full control over your tab selection process!

3. Closing and Saving Pages as Bookmarks

After you've selected the tabs you want to close or save, you can utilize either the buttons in the toolbox or keyboard shortcuts for more efficient browsing.

Closing Tabs: If a tab is no longer needed, you can easily close it. Simply hover over the tab element to reveal an 'X' button and click it to close the tab. If you want to close multiple selected tabs, you can click the third button in the toolbox or use the Ctrl + X shortcut for a quick cleanup.

Saving Tabs as Bookmarks: This is the core feature of PineTab and allows you to save the selected tabs as bookmarks in a specific directory. To do this, click on the second button in the toolbox or press Ctrl + S as a shortcut.

Please note that closing the currently open tab will also close the PineTab extension (the currently open tab is highlighted in amber color for your convenience).

4. Customizing Directory Location and Name

For those who prefer a more personalized bookmark organization, PineTab offers options to:

    1) Change the directory where your bookmark folders are saved

    2) Rename your bookmark folder

    3) Decide whether or not you want to create a parent folder for your bookmarks.

On initial installation, PineTab automatically creates a bookmark folder named 'PineTab' in a prominent place within your bookmark tree. All tabs you save using PineTab are stored in this folder by default. But worry not ! If you want to change this location, it's as simple as clicking on the fourth button in the toolbox and selecting a new location on your bookmark tree. Even better, PineTab adjusts seamlessly if you decide to relocate or rename the bookmark folder at any point.

When it comes to saving bookmarks, PineTab offers flexibility. You can choose to save tabs directly under your designated folder, or as part of a subfolder within the main folder (this is the default setting). To change this preference, just head over to settings and toggle the 'Create parent folder' option on or off.

If you have 'Create parent folder' turned on or are using the default PineTab settings, the extension is set up to create a new subfolder each time you use it. This subfolder will be named based on the current time. But, if you want a specific name for your folder, just click on the fifth button in the toolbox and type in your preferred name. Remember, each time you open the extension, the subfolder name resets to the default time stamp.

With these options, PineTab allows for a great deal of customization, helping you to manage your browser tabs in a way that suits your unique preferences and working style.

5. Additional features

Finally PineTab offers some more additional features than simply organizing the opened tabs.

First, there's Dark Mode. If you find that a darker screen is easier on your eyes or simply prefer the aesthetic, PineTab has got you covered. Just switch on the Dark Mode option in the settings and enjoy a darker interface.

Another exciting feature is the Tab Limit Notification. This is for those of you who like to keep a tight rein on your tab management. Simply activate this feature in the settings, and set the number of tabs that you are comfortable with. Once this limit is reached, PineTab will send a notification to let you know each time you visit a new website. This way, you can stay aware and avoid ending up with too many tabs open.
